Leading Through the Storm—How to Stay Grounded When Life Gets Hard

Leading Through the Storm—How to Stay Grounded When Life Gets Hard

June 09, 20253 min read

We often think of strong leaders as steady, composed, and unshakable. But what happens when the storm isn’t just professional—it’s personal?

What do you do when your parent gets sick? When you're quietly caregiving behind the scenes? When you're expected to lead at work while your own life feels like it's falling apart?

If you’ve ever carried the weight of leadership while navigating a personal crisis, you already know the toll it can take. And if you’re in that place right now, you are not alone.

Years ago, I found myself right there. I was leading a medical team during the height of the pandemic. My daughter was just three years old. And then, my mom got sick. On the outside, I looked steady—reliable, composed, in control. But inside, I was unraveling.

That season taught me something I’ll never forget: real leadership isn’t about pretending the storm isn’t happening. It’s about learning how to lead through it—with presence, purpose, and grace.

The 3P Framework: Pause. Prioritize. Persevere.

Out of that experience came a simple but powerful model I now teach to leadership teams, caregiving professionals, and healthcare organizations. It’s not just a crisis response—it’s a clarity compass. Here's how it works:

1. Pause

In times of crisis, our instinct is often to act. Fix it. Push forward. Solve the problem.

But the strongest leaders I know don’t just react—they pause. And that pause isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. Creating just a little space allows clarity to rise.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s actually happening right now?

  • What’s mine to carry—and what’s not?

  • Am I reacting… or responding with intention?

Sometimes, pausing looks like waiting 24 hours before making a big decision. It might be calling a mentor before firing off an email, or simply taking three grounding breaths before walking into a high-stakes meeting. The ability to pause under pressure isn’t a delay—it’s leadership in action.

2. Prioritize

When everything feels urgent, nothing gets done well. In stormy seasons, you have to lead differently—and that means making choices.

Ask yourself:

  • What are my non-negotiables right now?

  • What can I defer, delegate, or delete?

  • Where do I need to conserve—not deplete—my energy?

You might decide to delay a nonessential project, communicate one clear weekly priority to your team, or block time in the morning to care for your loved one without guilt. Leading through the storm means anchoring to what matters most—and letting go of the rest.

3. Persevere—with Support

Perseverance doesn’t mean running on empty. It means building systems that can carry you when your capacity dips.

You can’t lead well from burnout. But you can lead with boundaries, clarity, and support.

Try this:

  • Schedule a weekly check-in with a trusted colleague

  • Use frameworks to streamline repetitive decisions

  • Create a “reset routine” for chaotic days

  • Be honest with your team about what you’re managing

Saying, “I’m going through something, but here’s how I’ll still show up” isn’t failure—it’s trust-building. It’s modeling human leadership. And it gives others permission to do the same.

This Isn’t Just Theory—It’s Real-World Leadership

I’ve shared the 3P Framework with corporate executives facing caregiving, nonprofit directors navigating grief, healthcare professionals on the edge of burnout, and managers leading through layoffs or transition. It works because it meets you where you are.

This isn’t about being superhuman. It’s about showing up as a whole person—with clarity, boundaries, and care.

Final Thought

Leadership isn’t forged in calm waters. It’s shaped in the storm.

If you're in one right now, take a breath. Then take the next step:
Pause.
Prioritize.
Persevere—with support.

That’s how you lead with strength that lasts.

You’ve got this.
And I’ve got you.
