Dr. Anna Thomas, MD

As a doctor and caregiver coach, I am see every day just how much women give of themselves to care for loved ones, especially those with dementia. The reality is that dementia diagnoses are expected to double in the next 20 years, meaning even more women will find themselves balancing work, caregiving, and family—all at once. This is a load no one should have to carry alone, yet for many women, that’s exactly what it feels like.

The number so tell a powerful story. Right now, 66% of caregivers are women, who often end up putting in nearly 50% more time than men. For many of these women, caregiving means covering extra costs, too, with more than 20% providing financial support to aging parents or loved ones

This takes a toll. Many women reduce their work hours, take unpaid leave, or even leave their jobs to keep up with caregiving responsibilities. The “average” caregiver today is a 49-year-old woman, spending at least 20 hours a week in unpaid care. With this kind of commitment, it’s no surprise that 1 in 4 women caregivers report serious health issues, often dealing with chronic stress, exhaustion, or anxiety. Financially, too, women face setbacks, ending up with retirement funds that fall an average of $40,000 short due to lost work time.

This is why it’s time for real change. It’s my mission to make this journey a little easier, and to ensure that women caregivers feel supported and confident in all they do.
